TEAMS

Individuals can compete in the NorCal League, but what's even more fun is having a team to train and race with. Whether you are a student or coach, the League wants to do everything we can to help you form a team at your local high school. If you'd like to see a team form at your school, please send us an e-mail so we can help you out. The league can help in many ways, including help:

  1. Athletes find coaches
  2. Coaches form teams
  3. Teams become recognized by their schools
  4. Teams find additional volunteers

Below is some detailed information about teams. We encourage all athletes to recruit some fellow students and have some fun trying out the Division II competition.

TEAM REGISTRATION

All teams must register with the League. Doing so provides insurance coverage for all coaches and volunteers, as well as supporting League programs.

In order to register the team's Head Coach should fill out the 2010 Team Registration Form.

The price for registering a team varies depending on the division of the team and if the team has a licensed head coach.

Division I Teams:
With licensed Head Coach: $325
Without licensed Head Coach: $450

Division II Teams:
With licensed Head Coach: $175
Without licensed Head Coach: $300

If you have questions about team registration, please contact Lauren Haughey (lauren@norcalmtb.org).

Coach Licensing Program

The League requires that all coaches and ride volunteers obtain a license from the League. The purpose of this program is to ensure that all head coaches, assistant coaches and ride leaders are sufficiently knowledgeable so as to be a positive influence on all League riders.

Why get licensed? Coaches of a high school mountain bike team open themselves up to a considerable amount of liability. Whether it be at meetings on school grounds, rides in the wilderness or at League events, coaches run the risk of becoming liable in the event of an accident. Licensed coaches are covered by comprehensive liability insurance by the League.

Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Ride Leaders holding a League License are also eligible for certain benefits, including a custom free Specialized S-Works Helmet (while supplies last).

There are four levels of coaches licenses: Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Ride Leader and Temporary License. The requirements for each license are outlined below.

Divisions

NorCal League teams are divided into Division I and Division II teams. Larger teams are designated Division I, with Division II teams being made up of smaller teams. Once a team reaches 12 members it changes to Division I.

While Division I and Division II teams do race separately, they are treated equally by the League in all aspects. The seperation is only intended to provide a fair race environment.

Team Scoring

Teams are awarded points after every League race which count toward the teams' standings at that individual race and for the overall series. Both girls and boys points count toward that team's overall score. However, teams need not have boys' and girls'points to score for a race. Due to the difference in team size between divisions, Division I teamd and Division II teams are scored differently.

For Division I, the team's score is highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:

BBBBBBGG
BBBBBGGG
BBBBGGGG
BBBGGGGG
BBGGGGGG

For Division II, the team's score is the highers score possible out of the following boy/girl combinatins:

BBBG
BBGG
BGGG

For more information about Team and Individual Scoring, please refer to the League Rule Book (Section 8: "Team and Invidivual Scoring Rules"; pp. 20-21).

For more information about the League rules governing teams, please refer to the League Rule Book (Section 7: "Team Rules"; pp. 17-19)

Individuals, Home School Teams and Composite Teams

Don't have a team to race with? That's ok! Students can compete as an Independent racer in the League Series. While they will not be eligible for the Team Overall title, they are eligible for the Indiviual Race and Overall titles. Independent racers need not register a team, and should only register for the series, being sure to denote that they are racing as an "Independent" where appropriate on registration forms. All other rules apply.

Home-school riders are not allowed to join school-based teams, but they may join a composite team, form a regional home-school team or simply race as an independent rider. Home-school teams a much like composite teams but are comprised of home-school studens from a given geographic region.

The League is committed to maintaining a safe and open environment for all high-school aged individuals in Northern California (southern boundary is the southern borders of Monterey, Kings, Tulare, and Inyo counties) and we believe that our rules provide an opportunity for all to participate.
